Gee, wasn't a prominent, recent piece of demo advice to make sure the first cut on your demo quintessentially sounds like you? Mine sells chicken sandwiches to Canadians which is pretty close.

Back when scanning through VoiceBank demos was a thing (last year) I remember very few professionals took that advice. How about you VO-BBers?

Here's mine (at the moment): http://www.brucemiles.com/?ssm=5486&ssp=&ssa=1&sss=1

Listened and there's the mood of the piece but the voice could be none other than yours.

I found out very early in my career that I couldn't sound like Philip... so I concentrated on me. I think it may be some type of rite of passage. Unfortunately, some people don't get over it and they're still trying to sound like Don LaFontaine.

Even in fourth grade I recall being brought into the hall for tornado drills and being told to put our hands over our heads. I looked at the hundreds of pounds of plaster, beams and shingles in the ceiling overhead and asked classmates, "Do you really think our bony little hands would help if that came crashing down?"

On my demo(s) I'm me and possibly a few other people. Surely they'll hear someone they like in there.

One of my college professors used to say I had a "mild mannered Clark Kent voice." When I was trying to get into radio a classic rock DJ told me my voice was too "mellow" for the format and I needed some "swagger." I also had someone tell me I needed to focus on "soft sell," I didn't have the sound for "hard sell." As someone who's glands generate more testosterone than estrogen, it has to rub anyone the wrong way to hear you're a James Taylor in a Metallica world. So I quickly learned to ratchet up the "swagger." James Taylor or Metallica? I know who's playing stadiums!

If anyone asked my advice (and they don't), I would say:

"Don't be a one-trick pony. Casting directors love to hear you have range."

BUT ALSO...

"Don't try to be everything to everyone. Do one thing and do it well."

Follow both of these pieces of advice at the same time and you can't help but succeed. Or be terribly confused.

At the risk of being labeled a one-trick pony, I'm pretty sure all the spots on my demo just sound like me. Here's my latest: http://juliaknippen.com/wordpress/audio/JuliaKnippen_CommercialVO.mp3
