Hey guys! Thanks for warm welcome to the board.Ive gotten a lot of info from
You guys and expect a whole lot more.
I tell you guys a little about myself. Iíve persued VO for a number of years and
Finally hit paydirt. My latest VO demo sparked enough interest for DPN Talent
Agency to represent me. Iím not ready to quit my day job (Hollywood Grip) yet
But now the fantasy is becoming more of a reality.
I have a simple home set up and my agent is okay with me performing my
Auditions from home. Iím also on voices.com so I have lots of daily auditions.
Just a question - roughly how many auditions did it take to get a paid job?

Roosevelt

Welcome Roosevelt.

Quick answer to your question. My first paid job came as the result of my demo.

Significantly, my first big commercial campaign, broadcast nationally on both TV and radio came from two words on my demo.

My first 5 figure job (Pounds not Dollars) came as the result of me walking into an office and handing a senior manager a copy of my demo.

"It's an Actor's job to audition!" Lovely!

For the record, I'm not an actor, I just read out loud so the above rule doesn't apply to me Laugh

Enjoy the VO-BB

Welcome Roosevelt! You will find a huge amount of great information here.

You put a huge smile on my face when you asked the question:
How many auditions does it take to get a job?

I asked the very same question when I first joined. I soon realized that it was an impossible question to answer and was correctly chastised (in a polite way) for being silly! At the time I thought it was a very intelligent question. Looking back now it showed how naive I was.

First of all the VO community do not like Voices dot com and if you do some research you will find out why. It is a good way to learn how to audition and help pay for some coaching if you get a few jobs. It is not how you are going to build a career in this.

The next thing is that nobody can ever know when the right person will think you voice is right for their specific project. You can be the best VO in the world and send in a fantastic audition but the chooser of voices person may be looking for a completely different sound than your voice. There are people who say the rate of return on the P2P's is about 1 in 100 jobs for the average person. The ROI for this is terrible and will crush your soul eventually.

I don't mean to be a Debby Downer! Spend time learning the craft. Enjoy the time you get to work with a high quality coach and be patient. Spend time finding out about the business side of VO. If you are good enough and have the drive and determination you will start to make inroads and get business.

Good luck and welcome to the board!

Sometimes it takes no auditions at all....

I booked work just on the demo. If you can produce what you produced on the demo, you'll get work. To get work (as I'm learning) you have to market. To market, you have to know what you're good at and find those people who want you. To find those people who want you...repeat the previous steps. Oh and an agent helps too.

Very interesting. DPN is not usually first representation for a talent thatís not full time. Good work!

Working as a grip, living in Sherman Oaks, I would think that pretty much puts you into the midst of the industry. Iíd love to hear about being a grip, as Iíve never known one but see them in credits all the time.

I live in Portland but my son works in Burbank. Heís Operations Manager at West Coast Customs. His name is Chad, and I bring that up because with their weekly TV show, ĎInside West Coast Customsí, you may run into each other.

With all that being said, Welcome Roosevelt! And Randy and Sara too!
