Copy that. Most interested in hearing about G-Dubs's setups.

The U87 sample sounds SWEEEEET. (By which I mean "sweet" but prolonged, vowel-wise.)

And just between you and me--don't tell the wife you're chatting up New York engineers. It might sound... unseemly.

It’s funny but just this week I’ve gone back to using a 416 from a Klaus Heyne modded U87. I’m finding much more detail and overall creaminess from the Sennhesier. On my voice, in my room etc. I’ll check into your samples when I’m in the studio tomorrow.

Same here. I don't have a roomy space, and so my U87 sounds confined, which it is. The 416 performs better for me right now.

Dan, Curious what kind post work you do when you use the U87...?
As of this moment, nothing. The only time I'm using it is in session. A few years back, George created a template that has three options for recording: raw, commercial/narration, and promo/trailer. All I have to do is activate the mic on the sound I would like, hit record, and, voilà, a finished audio track ready to be dropped into a mix. My plan is in the coming week to have George set up one for the U87.

BTW, I was chatting up this template with the engineers at Star Trax New York and they asked to see the template session file. George's mix passed inspection with flying colors.

Here are the mics in action:
U87: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5RlZs6fFII

416: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56aKGfqyS4c

In this example 416 is way better thats why i use it all the time.

Fair enough--what books and sounds good is what works. For me, I've changed my tune, or one of them; a mic-positioning trick from Tim Tippets has brought my U87 back to the fore. And it seems to be working, for me--and for clients.

Good Gosh, but my ears and the buying world be fickle.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I think the U87 spot you reference sounds mighty fine. I get more of you in the sound.

But, again, prefs change anon and anon. You're going to sound great with whichever, and that is the right order of things.
