You've got it. One's ears are more important that one's vocal folds. Without good ears (and good software behind them) your vocal quality doesn't really matter much.

I was watching a VO documentary recently, and many of the top performers were saying they had a background in music, and they felt this helped. I agree. I can't help but hear a melody in the words. Next, you examine the actual content of the words, and that directs your feel. It seems that simple to me.
When we were kids in school and we had to go around the room reading, and I would hear how most everyone else read in a monotone, labored rhythm, I thought, "Is this what they hear in their head when they read a book? Is this why people don't read as much anymore?"
Maybe some time spent with a guitar playing the songs of the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, or something similarly simple but melodious could be an aid. |

Yes, many times I have stopped a session and demanded a Cellist. |

That's a background IN music, not background music. Unless it's for a really, really nice restaurant. |
