Will probably get an AT875R for a road mic to go into my MacBook, and need an interface. Is the MicPort Pro worth the price difference? Is there another option better than these two?
Thanks in advance! _________________ "If the shit fits, wear it."

I have the AT875R as a road mic. I used to have the X2U and found it just fine. However, I gave it away to someone in need, and replaced it with the Shure MVi. For an additional $30 it is (in my mind) far, far better and more versatile. It also has the advantage of interfacing nicely with an iPhone or iPad with a nice iOS interface (if you are so inclined). _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I'm not sure how the Preamp quality compares, but I've been using the Zoom H5 so as to not have to deploy a laptop each time I want to simply practice. Being able to cut/normalize/compress or lo-cut anywhere from 40-500hz is pretty handy - all on an SD card I can throw in a Mac or PC after. The Zoom's gain gets a bit hissy with my AT875r past 6-gain, but that's way too hot for that mic anyway. For comparison, 6-gain is almost too hot with the CAD e100s and again way too hot with the NT1 (black). Frankly, the AT875r sounds rather hollow and peaky to me, but I'm curious how this would change through a different Pre. (I'm still searching for the perfect mobile set-up, if you can't tell.) I'll be trying the MKH 50 on Tuesday, but am not expecting great results through such a cheap Pre. The Shure Beta 87a is really intriguing me! |

My two favorite travel preamps are the Yamaha ag03 and the audient id4. They go for $150 and $199 respectively, but you can find them as low as $110 and $169 if you go used/refurbished.
The Focusrite itrack solo and Steinberg ur12 are also nice and even cheaper, but the previous two trump them in terms of sound quality or features. Wow, glad someone referenced the Focusrite, I have used the 2i2 and have had no issues at all. Compact and road worthy. _________________ Create your own Great Life

The two are essentially the same thing. The only real difference is the price. |

Looks like the Shure MVi only has 48V phantom power in the USB mode. Lightning connection only gets you 12V so that could affect what Mics you use with it.
Just passing that along. _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

Phantom power on the MVi is not the full freight. I have one and the following is true when being powered from an iOS device:
1) It does not have the welly to power my 416
2) It works perfectly with the AT875R.
It is a shame, but I guess they just added the iOS Lightning capacity on it as an extra, rather than design around getting full phantom power from an iPhone. As the o/p was asking about a MacBook and an 875R, there are no issues... but it's certainly worth repeating in case anyone wants to run their 416 on their iPhone.
... and I am only being slightly sarcastic here _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
