So,

My wife and I are thinking about doing some serious traveling in the years to come, and I was wondering if anyone here has had some experience doing vo's "on the road" so to speak? My thought is that I would have to pull over to a quiet area, have the interior of the RV quiet and such to record. Just curious: has anyone out there experimented in doing something like this, and if so, what things should be considered when looking for an RV that would be at least somewhat compatible with doing vos?

Thanks!

I'm following this thread because this is something I'm interested in as well. I imagine an Airstream or a Class A could possibly have a treated space that would work, but probably only under the most ideal conditions. Perhaps a Porta-Booth and a 416 would help, but it would still need to be parked in a quiet space. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who had done this...

this is really coincidental. we're renting a travel trailer & will be RVing in a couple of weeks for 10 days or so - no particular destination in mind ... just going. i just sent out an email to my regulars that i will be unavailable for recording those days.

i know we all feel like we have to be available IMMEDIATELY AND AT ALL TIMES ... but ya know what, sometimes ya need a break.

i've done vacations both ways --- and i much prefer to not work.

just my 2˘

Todd... just asking. If you are contacted by a client, while on a "break", holiday, or vacation. And the client's request is "must have today!" Do you have special "increased" rates for these situations?

hi jim - it may not be smart - but no, i don't. if i don't plan on working, i don't bring my stuff. i made an exception once a few years ago & borrowed doug's mic, but that's been the only time. plus i got to visit the un-studio, so there's a bonus there. that said - i dunno - i guess if somebody offered me a truck-load of cash - i'd find some way to get it done. the fact is - i am a true believer in downtime.

Yep. "Off the grid" is how I put it.
I'm not so important that a client either can't wait or find someone else.

If that "someone else" ends up taking over the job, then the client didn't really care whether or not I did it in the first place.

How twoo!

A lot of people who do voice over work spend far too much time and more importantly MONEY trying to avoid losing that essential $89.25 job. That way lies madness.

CUE PHONE

"Hi Philip, it's Dave from Cyanide Post here. Need you to do a VO session this afternoon for Phhhhtt the new fragrance pour homme."

Having discovered it has to be this afternoon I agree and contact Allegro studies in Budapest coz that is where I is.

After a nice luncheon I go to the studio, do session, hand over $250 for studio hire then go about the business of vacationising.

First rule of running a voice over business is the same as the first rule of life - DISCOMPLIFY.

About three years back, I planned a vacation to go skiing for a week in Colorado. I notified everyone I would be gone for the week. No work.

Prior, I had also auditioned for a Promo gig for Sportsman Channel. The moment I arrived at my condo in Colorado, I got a call from my agent that I got the gig and they needed to record tomorrow. I told the agent, ‘I can go back into Denver, get a studio, record and come back here, but it would be like I just paid a bunch of money to go somewhere else and work, and I would totally miss my first day of skiing, which is what I came for. But I don’t want them to think I’m not interested.’ He said, ‘The only thing they’ll think is that you have a life. I’ll take care of it.’ He did. I came back to the gig which lasted for a couple years until Sportsman Channel was sold.

And the ‘Doug Turkel and the Un-studio part?’ When I was visiting in Miami, I got a call for a gig. I forget what it was, but I contacted Doug and he had me over to record it there.

I have an idea. Why don’t we just give out his phone and address here in case anyone else runs into that situation!

On more than one occasion, when I was vacationing in South Florida, Doug graciously offered me the use of his studio. In each case, I was able to get by with my travel rig, but it was nice to know I had that safety net available.

And during those trips, Doug and I usually manage to meet up with other fellow voiceoverists at an establishment where adult beverages are served. Always a highlight of the visit.

Again, wouldn't that be Doug's studio?

In most recent years, it's been this joint:

Signal to noise ratio may not be as good as Doug's studio, but you can't beat the view.

It's always a great time, Lee! (And maybe next time, DC will actually manage to join us. Smile )
