I've looked all over trying to find documentation on the Mackie's channel insert output levels. Here's my conundrom. If I run directly into my audio interface, the levels are much higher than running directly into the mixer and recording what's coming out of the channel insert. This is PRE fader. Also, it's not full insertion, just the TIP.

Anyone?

Kevin,

I seem to recall in the documentation for my very old (pre-VLZ) 1202 that the insert level was listed as -10. Don't know if that's any help to you, since it's not the same build and then there's my potentially faulty memory to consider. But I offer what I can.

Under "Specifications" on page 31 of the manual, it lists Maximum Levels as:
Main Mix XLR Out +28dBu
All other outputs +22dBu

Not sure if this is what you were looking for.

Good question, but as the Insert Send/Return is unbalanced I'd not be surprised if it's referenced at -10dB and not +4dB.

Thank you, all. I never even considered it would be unbalanced, I've been working with balanced everything forever. I'll route those channels out to the main mix, not the option I wanted, but that's that.

Use whichever sounds the cleanest in the end-product, but I've never bothered with the insert output technique because I've found that if your gain-staging is setup correctly in the Mackie board the -80dBu to -100dBu (depending the model) self-noise of the board's Main Outs really doesn't come into play.

Reviving an old thread but a good one.

I was playing with my Yamaha MG16/4 board this weekend, which has a main output self-noise of -100 dBu.

Using the main outs sounded pretty similar to my Mackie VLZ4 board, but with a different flavor.

Using the Yamaha insert to connect to my Scarlett 2i2 was completely different to either the Mackie or Yamaha main outs. More lows and highs - it was really too much!

Then I tried the Yamaha PRE fader AUX 1 out. Nicer than the Mackie or Yammy main outs but not crazily different as it was with the insert out. The clear winner! I'll give a file link sometime this week.

Here's the file. Same sentence thrice:
1.) Yamaha MG 16/4 Mains out to the Scarlett 2i2
2.) Yamaha MG 16/4 Insert out to the Scarlett 2i2
3.) Yamaha MG 16/4 AUX 1 Pre Fader out to the Scarlett 2i2
