I just wanted to ask everyone what was the magic number of submissions that you submitted to voices.com before getting a job?
I am up to 28 in the last 2 weeks and have guessed my number will be 51!

Is this a serious question?

There is no magic number for any audition opportunity platform (P2P, direct requests or an agent)

The better you are at knowing what auditions to submit for, the more jobs you will get.

The better you are at auditioning, the more jobs you will get.

Todd is incorrect. The actual number is the square root of -3. Shocked

Actually, Connie is correct. There is no number. If you're really good and really lucky, the number could be 1. If you're really good and not so lucky, or really lucky and not so good, your number could be 20 or 200. It's a crap shoot.

Craig, this is where doing a little research through our archives first will help you. Search "voices", and "P2P", and "V123" and you will find dozens of discussions on the worthiness of pay-to-play (P2P) sites like voices, and how to increase your chances of getting selected.

Good luck,

Bruce

The real magic is knowing that Voices.com are thieves in not posting the correct rates and budget along with skimming money off that and the fees they charge to use their payment system.

Truly.... Get out of there as fast as possible. That company is not legit. Because they are in Canada it's hard to prosecute from the USA.

It was a kind of tongue in cheek question! It is difficult when you first start. You have insecurities. Are you good enough? Searching for re-assurance! It is a lonely life being in the booth!
I also know that the P2P sites are a rip-off for more experienced and high quality Voice Actors. But the guys at the bottom have to start somewhere and work their way up with hard work, training and dedication. The end game is always to have the customers come to you direct or through an agent. This is usually not applicable to newbies.
I have revised my number to the square root of infiniti! That should work! Wink

Received wisdom is that to succeed in voice over work one must first learn to ski uphill. Not true. Do not start with P2P sites, Take the road less travelled.

Listen to your Uncle Philip! Impressive people are only impressed with impressive work. No, you do not have to start somewhere. If you want to be a professional VO actor you start professionally!!

We've all been there.

I would say it's the same for everybody and at the same time, different for everybody.

Hang around here, learn all you can. I don't know your background but if you need it, get some basic training on how to do this stuff. If you are auditioning without at least a basic level of experience then you are shooting yourself in the foot, IMO.

But again I don't know your background or level of experience. But if you are still wondering if you are "good enough", that tells me there is some work to do. The good news is most VOs have had to struggle with the same self-doubt at some point in their career.

...yes Cousin Todd I meant to add that (for me anyway) the insecurity never quite completely goes away......the old "they chose me for the audition but can I deliver during the actual session" gremlins...... Ninja

I promised Peter O'Connell that I wouldn't join in any more discussions about Voices dot com.

So I'm not.

However... I will just say how happy I am that I followed the two-step program:
1) Dump Voices
2) Dump the angst about Voices.

Unfortunately, these two steps were separated by a couple of years. Now I find them to be no more than an amusing distraction... with occasional bouts of schadenfreude when I see them shoot themselves in the foot or flounder around while trying to act competently.

I have not submitted a P2P audition in about 6 months and have had no problem staying busy in spite of it.
