Paul, FWIW, allow me to share with you my own experience.

I am not one of the heavy hitters whose voice you hear on national spots or video games or movie trailers, but I have built a solid steady business that has allowed me to do it full time, and survive comfortably, for over a dozen years. I do a lot... LOT of e-learning, corporate narration, audiobooks, safety training, a few independent documentaries... stuff like that.

I am listed with 5 agencies, 2 of which I never hear from anymore and wonder if they're even still around. The other three? I get a job or two a year from.

When I DO get an agency job, it's always a nice one, good pay, good clients.

However, the vast, VAST bulk of my business is built on repeat and referral business that has come over the years from any number of sources; P2Ps (love 'em or hate 'em, they can get you business), referrals, personal contacts, cold auditions etc.

I would say maybe 5% of my work comes thru agents. Maybe 5% thru cold auditions (mostly audiobooks). Now I'm at the point where 90% comes through repeat and referrals.

It's great to have an agent, and doubly great to have more than that. And if you ever hit "the big time" and are in that league of the Union big boys in L.A. , NY and similar big markets, a good agent is a MUST HAVE.

Til then, work on all those other things, and when that occasional job via an agent lands on your desk, be grateful, do it great, and then get back to all those other basics that keep you in business.

Well, I'm a union guy in LA, and I don't have an LA agent. I'm perfectly happy doing a ton of audiobooks and elearning. An agent is great if you can land one of the big ones. But remember, you have to prove you can BOOK if you want to remain on their roster.

Point is, an agent is not panacea of VO. Nice to have, but not necessary.
