Wow. My wife, our children and I will sit on leather furniture in a warm, plush den at her parents, with free beer, free chips, free entree and no drunks with which to contend - not to mention a mute button for when the obnoxious musical interludes start up - and it will cost us precisely all of exactly $0*.

Of course, there's no view at all, aside from the television.

Of course, of course, I'm also extremely boring and tend to just fall asleep early.

* == well, I'll probably vacuum and do the dishes for Kimmy's mom, just to be nice.

If you intend to do New Year's in New York city, you get what you deserve.

What astounds me isn't that Olive Garden charges $400 for NYE dinner...it's that people pay it.

I did the NY Times Square thing once (2005/6). Once was enough. We actually got a good deal on a hotel (over on 2nd Ave - four of us sharing a large room) and some very reasonable tickets for a Broadway Show on New Year's Eve. The big upside of that was that the theatre was within the cordoned-off security area, so our theatre tickets got us speed-tracked through security into the area, and when the show ended, we were straight out into a good vantage spot.

It was an experience, but I have no desire to do it again.

I love NYC. If I go in February or July, I'll celebrate a new year in the City then, at a 10th of the cost.

We're looking into going to a comedy club here that has a show every hour throughout the evening and at the end of each hour they celebrate the new year with whatever time zone is celebrating at the time. We can go out and then be home before the real crazies hit the streets!

Of course we could celebrate at breakfast tomorrow with our friends in Australia and NZ! Wizard

Let's all meet in Times Square on Sunday, October 2nd. Then we can celebrate the New Year and not have to fight the crowds. cool

I take exception to that remark Deebs - NYC is a FANTASTIC place to spend NYE. As long as you're nowhere near Times Square. Wink

As for actually GOING somewhere?

um... no.

NYE = amateur night.

I'm going to be at home - most likely with a few good friends watching screeners and drinking champagne.

This was "borrowed" (OK, stolen) from Garnet Williams. I don't know who he borrowed it from. But this seemed like a good place to post it.

Actually, Lee, that poster...

Back in the early-mid 80s (and again in the late 90s), when I was producing the OUTQ Club Calendar spots – "What's happening in the area's hottest clubs" – that aired on NYC's WPLJ, WNEW-FM, WKTU and WAPP, that poster describes what was happening pretty much every evening at many of the area's hottest clubs, including those at the NJ shore, that I had the "pleasure" of visiting on rare occasions.

Sometimes I curse my extensive and detailed memory.

Lee,
I resemble that remark. I'm from Jersey (exit 9). The first date with my wife was at a NYE party in the City. I can't believe she kept me after I showered the porcelin God at her NYC apartment with my love and affection only to forget about it in a drunken stupor until I heard her screams of horror in the late morning. Still together after 25 years. That's love.

That's exactly what I call it too, Melissa. Because that's exactly what it is.

We've hosted a few friendly gatherings at our house and spent the night with folks we're thankful to know and played Cards Against Humanity. Smile
