Congrats on the audiobook gig, Paul! And glad to hear that the recommendation for Scott bore fruit. He's amazing, and like you say, a great guy!

Thanks Kevin,

Scott spoke very highly of you! I think I'll follow through with him in at least some form. I did my Intro to Voice workshop with Edge, and they seemed great, but I don't want to do their whole package. At least 1/2 of it is based on Studio setup and marketing, which I have covered pretty well in my opinion. As has been pointed out here, if anything I'm marketing TOO Much too soon!

I'm hoping Scott can just help me with technique, as it seems he can.

I am also investigating acting classes locally. I'm lucky to live in an area with several options, including my Alma Mater that is a few miles away and has produced some hollywood talent including the hottest thing around right now, Amy Schumer.

Mandy, I just re-read this post. How do you deal with this? I coach 2 soccer teams in the fall, 1 basketball in the winter and both softball and baseball in the Spring. My voice is always shot after practice and I can't do any work that night. I'm struggling to find a balance.

As part of my initial research, I did the Edge Studios Intro workshop. As a personal choice for me, I found their packages to be a little weird...3 demos, with instruction, for about $3k? And the "instruction" was some teleseminars; I can't get into that more because I never fully understood how the instruction part worked. I went with a one-on-one coach, Nancy Wolfson, and could not be happier. I will stidy with other people in the future (Bob, I'm looking at you), and am always looking to learn, but Edge felt a little like a demo factory to me. Again, my personal opinion. I would say go with your gut, but make sure you're fully informed about whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the reply. I got through the Intro session and it was good. Also there was ZERO pushing of their courses. They sent me an email with some notes from the session and I haven't heard from them since. I do respect that. Still weighing options.

They don't hard-sell, that is definitely a plus.

So, I'm still talking to various coaches. You should always get at least 3 estimates for any work on your house, this should be sort of the same right?

I won't name anybody specifically, because I don't want to disparage anyone, but I've contacted 2 outfits that were very nice and helpful, but then left me completely alone to decide. Over a week since last contact from either.

The third, also was very helpful, but has been much more aggressive. First, they have a 2 tier structure. Pay as you go, and Pay all up front for a cheaper price. Second, they keep contacting me, offering discounts, if I do the up front. Two times.

Both are big red flags right? My gut says yes.

Do not ask for a price, a curriculum or the height and weight of the average person who will be teaching you.

Look for verifiable results. Be a journalist and fact check.

Are they doing regularly what you would like to be doing? Have they taught someone who is regularly doing what you would like to do? Get a name and find the credit. Find the credit from somewhere other than the individuals web site.

You should not be sold you should find something you want to buy, or in this case someone.

Be taught by a Master not a Pauper.

What Philip said.

To that end, I highly recommend Nancy Wolfson (www.braintracksaudio.com). She'll tell you what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear... so you need to have a thick skin if you work with her. But you need that anyway if you want to have a successful career in v-o.
