Analog VU meters = joy

Any one of these preamps would be a welcome addition to a studio.

Just got to finish restoring some vintage console units to add to my desk. It's not as clean as most of my other pres, but has a nice coloration to my ears.

The lesson here is this: use what sounds good to you, and gets you booked. Everything else are just toys... wonderful, glorious toys. Smile

Test - Recorded sans M5, just phantom power from mixer no added EQ or nuthun. Recorded same phrases WITH M5.

Everyone is an expert, everyone listens carefully so I edited the phrases together in some case mid syllable "Hello Im Ph(change to M5)ilip Banks". You get the picture.

I couldn't tell the difference and I knew where the edits were. No one else could tell either. M5 back in the package and I have £1,200 to spend on a trip somewhere!

Yamaha MG06X. Bought it last week from a local music shop. It doesn't do anything but does it beautifully.

I know many people who fit the same description. (When amongst voiceoverists, it comes with the territory.)

But isn't that the exact reasoning behind Philip's claim to fame and years of unbridled financial success?

The perfectly executed Double Iranian Pause.

Can't go wrong with a Yamaha. I used a number of them when mixing bands and all of them had nice clean sound.

Thanks for sharing that, Philip. And thanks for proving the point I make over and over that it ain't fancy, Class A gear that gets and keeps your fancy, Class A roof over your head. It's your TALENT.

What we all need is something to work with our gear to make it sound AWESOME. It's called Ability, the only thing in your signal chain that shouldn't be set to Bypass but more often than not ...is!

How bad has the voice over world become? Not only do people listen to the things I say but some actually place some value on them.

That Yamaha mixer, the best £99 I've ever spent.

George, 'pon this very day, design the perfect VO mic and I shall lend my name to it, price point $699. Next year you will buy your daughter a MASSIVE yacht just for larks.

Excuse me, I need to go and be wise.

Yammy mixers are super! I've had a MG 16/4 that has worked great for ages.

I'm using a Mackie 402 VLZ4 as my preamp. $99. Sounds terrific. Better than most $500 preamps, at least. Only problem is the HPF takes out too much of the low end, but if you dial in a smidge (2-3 dcool of 80 Hz on the EQ, the problem is solved.

I'll never understand people (not present company) who spend a grand or two on a preamp, and then have large hard surfaces close to their microphones.
