Our sky was bloody overcast, so no blood moon here.

I screwed that one up...I was thinking the 8th, but forgot that the 8th started in the morning, so I was planning for what was actually the 9th...bonehead move. Well there will be another one in 6 months...and then another one in 6 months Smile

Too early for me on the West Coast. Even my insomnia didn't work in my favor this time. Until the next one...

I got up in time to see it just after its peak. DW asked me earlier to wake her if it was wonderful. It was pretty spiffy, but from the deck here it was only about the size of a small lima bean, so I let her sleep in.

Photos like the one above do a much better job of showing it off anyway. Thanks!

My 11 year old daughter and I got up at 3:40am while my wife and younger daughter slept in. On the West Coast here, it was supposed to 'total' at 3:55 and we wanted to catch it. The weather has been beautiful all summer here in Portland (in spite of the fact that Bruce says it's too hot) and it was a gorgeous night.

It was two fold. The moon was beautiful, and sitting outside talking with my little girl in the early morning hours watching an eclipse, was one of those special, 'be remembered for a long time' moments. Well worth being a little tired the next day.

Good month for skygazing! First a blood moon and now a partial solar eclipse. Keep yer eyes open Thursday afternoon/evening, it should be visible over most of North America. (errr, not TOO open. It's recommended not to look directly at the eclipse, etc etc)

When I was in Home Depot yesterday, I saw they had welder's glass (replacement glass for a welding helmet) for just $5 in the tool department. You can safely look through that type of glass, directly at the sun. It's about the only thing that you can use.

The best way I've found to see a solar eclipse is to look at the ground in the shadow of a tree. You can see hundreds of eclipses there.... presuming you're in a place where the trees still have leaves.

Just about any kind of tree with leaves, oak, ash, maple etc. All the spaces between the leaves, especially the small ones, act as pin hole cameras...the cardboard with a tiny hole we were taught to use as kids to see the sun.
