The closing words from his stand up show "reality, what a concept" are more than appropriate.

"You know, people are kinda like flowers and it's been a privilege just walking in your garden. My love goes with you".

Such sad news. This hit just as we were starting our evening celebration of Eric's birthday last night. Certainly put our time enjoying our son's life in a sobering perspective.

Mork & Mindy creator Garry Marshall tweeted, "He could make everybody happy except himself."

I grew up in Boulder and remember the Mork and Mindy days with great fondness. Last night, people started spontaneously gathering at the house where some of the filming took place, and there are placards and flowers there now.

When we briefly moved out of state in 1979, our new neighbors (upon hearing we were from Boulder, CO) would ask us if we'd ever met Mork.

One of my hopes was to someday hire Mr. Williams to do a voice-over for one of our shows, but it is now not to happen. I hope he is happier where he is. He will truly be missed.

RIP, Robin.

In the early 80's I worked in a game store in the L.A. area that sold chess computers among other things.

One day a man walked in and began asking me about a game he was interested in called, Ace of Aces. We began going over the game when the assistent manager asked me to help someone with a chess computer.

The man followed me over to the chess computer section. I turned on one chess computer which made a funny electric sound...zzzzzzuuupp!

My new friend heard the sound the computer made and he instantly recreated the exact same sound...zzzzzzuupp! Robin Williams had a great ear. He was an intelligent man and seemed like a nice guy.

So sorry to hear the news.

I've never understood why so many people would rather keep their sadness and other issues hidden and allow them to fester and consume a little more of them every day than to admit to their closest friends that they are hurting. Sharing the good, as well as the not-so-good, is one of the things close friends are for. Clearly, humans have the capacity for so many wonderful things, but open, honest communication is, sadly, not one of them.

Dick Cavett shares some memories of Mr. Williams along with some excellent thoughts on depression and actors.

Quote:
Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my sadness hid
Smiling in the public eye
But in my lonely room I cry
The tears of a clown
When there's no one around

'The Tears Of A Clown'

Mike,

I think from what I understand of deep depression, the person may not feel able to share it, it is so crippling. It's not that they don't want to, it's that that they can't. It's that deep a well.

Thanks, CC. Actually, I should've said my question was more of a rhetorical one. This is something that hits somewhat close to home for me.

Understood. And with today's revelation of his Parkinsons, that adds a new layer to what he had to deal with.

Watching him perform over the years I would wonder if he wasn't bipolar. He had a real manic side. Some forms of mental illness are orgnic as is the case with bipolar disorder. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which requies medication to treat. Traditional psycho therapy alone is not enough. I have a family member who lives with a bipolar disorder.

Unfortunately many try to self medicate as Robin once did with drugs and alcohol which only creates other problems and solves none. If you know someone suffering from depression or other mental illness urge them to get proffesional help. It may save a life.

I feel for the family left behind.

A little late in responding, but much of my VO work is done in the mental health sector.

Depression is very, very, very real. Not talked about as much as it should be amongst men, much less amongst minority groups, regardless of gender, in America.

I remember when Robin was going through his divorce...had to put his vineyard in California up for sale, was struggling with alcoholism, and admitted himself into treatment soon thereafter.

He did not recover from the divorce, but it was really just an event in a long list of events of his gift making everyone else happy around him...but himself, that ultimately led to his demise.

Tragic, to say the very least.

My heart goes out to his family.
