Yes, and he didn't factor taxes or health insurance costs into that amount needed.

Taxes, Health Insurance Premiums and daily trips to Starbucks can be covered by the additional 30K, per year, that you will bring in by recycling cans, glass and tons of newspaper at the recycle depot. That's an additional $577.00 income per week.

Plus, those numbers are off by 20%, since Fiverr's SurePa... uh, I mean commission ($1) wasn't factored in.

As if $5 weren't bad enough, I am positively dumbstruck that anyone could think that landing a $4 gig is worth the time invested in doing said gig. In this case, Bailey, recycling glass and cans probably IS a better return - and hey, at least you get some exercise while you're at it! Shocked

Right now I have a hilarious image in my head of somebody being outraged that he doesn't get to keep the whole five dollars. Gasp

The greatest gift to a business person is another distraction. The gift is not one received it is one freely given to the 99 other people around them.

Fiverrr, V123, Voice.cannuck, what mic, cable, pre, board, DAW, mac, PC, tablet, soundproofing, coach, teaching book or DVD or online videos, now I have an agent do I need a manager? SEO, will it help my blog and therefore my site and thereafter my career.

STOP IT!

Love solutions not problems.

"YES THAT ALL VERY WELL PHILIP! But don't you want to discuss the real problems affecting the Voice Over industry?" Followed by a bit of fist shaking.

I prefer The Haywain.

There's a sliding scale of what is relevant to the "VO industry". Unfortunately there is no clear line and we tend to get bogged down in that no-man's land. With Fiverr, there is no such ambiguity. They are of no importance and impact a "real VO" as much as the price of bananas.

Dammit... I've just responded on a Fiverr thread. I am as guilty as anyone I suppose. It's a fair cop, guv'nor. I'm up before the beak in the mornin', eh?

Change the valves in your vintage pre for the Arthur Mullard Yuss series to add some east end warmff. You'll feel SOOOO much better.

I am so reminded (not necessarily by Mr. Mullard, although he seems to be a bit of a wholesome type) of the same kinds of crap handed down to writers and artists by people who call up and say, "Can you do XXX kinds of work for us like, by tomorrow, dude? And oh, we can't pay, but we'll let you use it in your portfolio/on your demo and we'll give you lots of publicity."

D00d.

Just got one of those last week. Email saying "We have admired your work for a long time and think you'd be a great addition to our [project]. We have hired a professional writer to help us write the site, but we also would love to have your writing, too. We can't pay, but we can give you lots of PR."

You can suss out for yourself all the levels of disrespect and ignorance in just a few lines.

My response to said idiocy: "I am a professional science writer. As such, I charge for my services."

That was all I wrote, and they never responded back.

Interestingly, I've not had the same experience in VO. But, that Fiver-er-four-er, er... rip-off-errrrr... bunch seems largely based on similar ideas of getting something for free, or cheap, and as insultingly as possible.

Hey, don't knock the price of bananas. My understanding of Germany's reunification is that folks from the DDR, upon entering the west, promptly spent all of their "welcome home" money on *bananas* and actually created a banana shortage.

So, the price of bananas *could* affect you; you just never know when or how.

The humble banana is a wonderful indicator of the end of a period of austerity in any European society. During WWII, cargo ships plying the Atlantic had far more precious cargoes than the humble banana. Shipping South American or Caribbean fruit through a war-zone was deemed non-essential and an unnecessary risk of shipping resources.

However, come the end of the war in Europe, the re-appearance of the humble banana was seen as sign of recovery... the population could now have what was once (literally) a forbidden fruit.

(Extract from "Phallic Fruit - You've Never Had It So Good" by Antonius Musa) Wink

... and to come full circle, at today's price, a single Fiverr job will get you over six pounds of bananas. Which would be perfect for this guy.
