Not an advertisement - just a looky-here for anybody else who likes to ogle old microphones. A friend of a friend does mic restoration, focusing on the classic RCA models:

He also has a neat video of his restoration process - it is worth the time to watch. Link for it is atop the page linked here.

This 77D is striking - the before and after and some of the guts are shown here:

This guy also restores "classic chainsaws." I didn't know there *was* such a thing as a classic chainsaw, until I heard all about it (and I do mean *all*) on a car trip up to Sweetwater a while back.

Thanks for that!

Wow. The guy even does his own plating. The whole shebang. He's also funny, for an electronics nerd:

He's a pretty wild cat. Spending four hours in the car with him on our gear excursion... up through the farms and Amish country as we headed north in Indiana, every tractor, truck, piece of farm or road equipment, horse buggy wheel... he would suddenly launch into a detailed description of not only how each is made, but all metallurgical considerations and, for those items with engines, what made each one more or less efficient.

For him, I think restoring mics is just a relaxing little hobby...
