At first listen on smaller, yet good, speakers, A sounds more balanced and a bit stronger. B sounds a bit "cheaper." |

Both sound good. Mic B has a bit more timbre. Both are quite usable.
Didn't hear any vices.
That said, differences show up more when doing actual VO where you might be pushing your voice a bit. Sibilance rears its head.
Both sound pretty well rounded in the file. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

I'll post another sample that reveals the two models after we've had 10 or so responses. No clear winner yet! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

To close to call either way I think... but I suspect there's a whole boatload of dollars difference. My guess is the German is at least five times as expensive (103?)... but, based on this sample, I wouldn't bet any money on which is which! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I will reserve my guesses until after the Big Reveal. However, my preference is Mic A.
Mic A is smooth and does not have any harsh/brittleness revealed in the word "microphone" on both mics.
Mic B is not bad, although a different placement would be demanded when addressing this microphone. It is not as smooth and silky as I would expect, indicating things which I will not present at this time.
Microphone B would however be something which many producers today would consider desirable - fragility.
With the high's and brittleness of Mic B; many new school producers today would say this mic would cut through then mix - better than Mic A. I disagree however, but that is my opinion.

For characters, documentaries, and talking from more of a distance or projecting more - I'll take A.
For lower key, close up reads, or some higher-projecting spots with the right voice, give me B.
They're both nice.
Is B an ADK (Odin/Thor?) or a sE Electronics mic? I've heard samples of sE on singers that sound terrific. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

To my ears (and JBL 2328 monitors) Mic 'A' sounds like it could be Mic 'B' after a bit of judicious EQ. That said, My pick of the litter would be Mic 'A'... Smooth and creamy sounding; eager to hear which is which.

I agree that Mic B has more timbre, I don't detect the brittleness compared to A. I have a hard time finding something wrong with either one. I listened on computer speakers and through my headphones. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Voted before reading.
Chose Mic A for exactly the same reasons stated here.
The Mics were very close....BUT....I detected a slight brittleness or harshness to mic B,
A was smoother and more pleasant. For that reason, it got my vote. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Jason, what do you mean I "ruined it?" Did you watch Monday's EWABS all the way through?
Listen to the original sample if you still want to guess, annnnnd...
OK, if you want to know which mic is which, listen to this sample:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/r7a5ybisv1dp41d/MXL1006vTLM103-test.wav
There's only one of cheaper mics on Ebay, so good luck! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I downloaded the file to look at the spectral view of them and there was a marker with the mic names before each sample. |

Wow. MXL does make some smooth mics (2003a). I loved my V67...but it got to be noisy.
If they made a V67 with a self noise of around 7dBA, I'd snatch up a bucket full of them.
A TLM103 sounds brittle? Nah, how could that possibly be??? _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

i have always been a lukewarm supporter of mxl. for me, quality control is the main issue. my 1st v69 sounded like there was a bee hive inside it. i sent it back - they sent another and it sounded great - i replaced the cheap-o tube with a NOS mullard and it sounded even better. you DO have to make sure to get an OLD tube though - the mullard name was sold to sovtek and they make some pretty crappy tubes. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis
