Do any VO people have experience with adult orthodontics, either braces or Invisalign? I'm wondering how either would affect my speaking voice.

Been there, done it.

Had braces for 4 years as a teen and then - drat - had to do it all over again about 5 or so years ago, although this time around only for about 2.5 years.

Due to cost, I just went the cheap route, good old silver sparklers. Didn't affect my ability to do v/o one bit. And, as an aside, I am SO GLAD I had it done. I have a very nice smile now, whereas before my teeth were starting to overlap each other so much that I was in danger of some serious dental damage.

The difference in cost is not that much nowadays. My orthodontist is pushing me to get Invisalign -- which are removable -- but they sound like a pain to maintain. I think I'd prefer regular old braces if they won't affect my speaking ability.

I did Invisalign. It did effect my speech. I had to adapt. But yes, things changed a bit.

Try a couple of altoids, chiclets, tictacs (your choice) in your cheeks, lower lip, back corners.... Wherever you like....

Bottom line... When your mouth changes, your speech changes.

Can you adapt? Absolutely. Most of us do.

If it's affecting your work... See a pro. I have both a periodontist and a speech therapist. Both are worth their weight in gold.
