I'm late to this thread (pretty typical for me) but can echo what Chris said. I ordered the DAWbox plans and built a booth two or three years ago. Thankfully, my architecture student son was home for the summer and helped me.

The plans are a good starting point but don't expect to follow them exactly as some of what's specified just doesn't work. As I recall, they're also damned hard to read as some of the type is really small (6 pt. font). But, like I said, it's a starting point.

I put mine in my basement, both for sound isolation and for easier temperature control. Yeah, it gets hot in there after a while. Since I didn't build and install the ventilation kit, mine is vented by me opening the door. On long sessions, that happens every 1/2 hour or so. It's definitely not perfect but it has helped me to work around 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a wife.

My biggest fear now is ever having to take the damned thing apart if and when we sell this house. <gulp>

+1 on everyone's DAWbox experience. I will also add that my experience contacting the plan designer wasn't positive.

After giving up on those plans and chatting with my carpenter FIL, I hunted for materials and mocked up my own idea. Then I emailed the sketches to George and used a service credit to have an extremely useful conversation with him about what I was missing / forgetting / doing wrong / doing right. I strongly recommend it.

lee, if you go with the DAW box, bobbin may be a good source for guidance and understanding; she and her husband pete built hers originally, then rebuilt after their move last year.

I bought the dawbox plans, and threw them away. The booth I'm building right now is roughly trapezoidal, about 5' wide tapering to just under 4' at the door end, and roughly 6'6" long, with a ceiling that will be angled from 6'6" to 7'. Because it's just too easy to build 90 degree corners. What the hell was I thinking!?! If I ever come up for air, will post more (along with pics).

I've learned from this thread that the Dawbox is a single wall construction, so that eliminates that. I plan to do an outer wall of MDF and an inner wall of two layers of 5/8" drywall, with the inner walls mounted on resilient channel and maybe the outer wall, too, and Roxul Safe & Sound in between.

I like what Donna is building (and her nail gun looks a bit newer than mine), although I have considerably less space to work with -- only about 4½ feet per side outer dimension. Seeing what she has posted on Facebook has also convinced me that I should probably hire an assistant to help me build mine. All the more reason I need a set of plans rather than just something scribbled on the back of a placemat.

You may want drywall on the outside too. MDF isn't super dense.

There are so many resources out there, it's easy to lose a year (or a year and a half in my case) looking for the perfect plans. But when it comes down to chop saws and nail guns, you have to work with the space you have available, so might as well start from scratch.

Good call on getting an assistant at least for the ceiling, Lee. It took 3 of us to get mine into position, even using the drywall lift. I do not want to do that again!
