I had a 415 at one time. It sounds almost identical to the 416. Slightly warmer.
Unless you are real mic geek (like me) who is always going to obsess over the slight difference between the two, you could save some $$$ by getting a 415.
The 416 to my ear might have a touch more of an "edge" but it's a slight, if any , difference IMO. |

We verified the serial number with Chris at Sennheiser/Neumann, but it doesn't mean the serial isn't just a duplicate of a real serial, and that there are hundreds out there with the same serial number. And upon an A/B comparison with a confirmed legit 416, they certainly don't sound the same. China knockoffs strike again. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

If someone pays $250 for a 416 from China... well... I have no real sympathy for anyone who thought they were getting a real bargain. When I bought my Rolex Oyster for $25, I knew what I was getting!
However, I'm concerned about the chilling effect this will have on the used market. There are genuine deals to be had on a used 416, but I certainly wouldn't have the confidence to buy one from an unknown source now (always risky anyway). Someone buys a knock-off for $250 and then pushes it out as a genuine used one for $600... scary. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

What was the audible difference between the knockoff and the real? |

so what do you mean by this? |
The electronic guts and diaphram of the mic have no serial numbers. Only the metal tube housing has a serial #
How do you know if you have the real thing? |

This is the real issue.
I PM'd a few people that bought the Chinese or Japanese 416's and they had no problem with them. Yes, they could re-sell and feel they are legitimately selling a fine microphone, without intentionally intending to rip anyone off.. maybe only trying to flip a $300 mic for $600 their only intention. _________________ Lee Kanne

Interesting...okay no one remembers Boris Badenoff. George seems to be giving the hard science at the moment. I think this will resolve because I want Sennheiser to weigh in. Officially, with the word if this is their mic or a knockoff. Or a new mic built with inferior materials. George I think you are saying you tried both and definitely thought it was an inferior product?
So..I'll follow the sun... But the waters seem murkey. There are some great Mic people on here..check it out for us. We trust you. _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |

Invest $1000 in your career for a NEW one from a trusted dealer.
Every VO pro should have a 416, and one other mic of choice. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

A a proud owner of one bought from Sweetwater, I agree with Bill. I love that thing, it's the centerpiece of my studio and it can give you a confidence in your sound that my old cheap mics never will. Actually, the 416 is really a pretty reasonably priced mic when you consider it's used by some of the very best in the business. Many high end pro setups have 2-5 times that much invested in just the pre, which has much less affect on the sound than a mic. |

I purchased my second one from BextelBVG (Broadcast Video Gear) in Burbank, CA. I paid $825.00 for it a Demo, at the time they had them at $899.00 That is....if you call and talk real nice to Joyce. She talked me into the demo by saying that I would never know that it was out of the Box. She was so right!
Don't ever sell one if you own one...you will be buying it back sometime in the future.
Just my thoughts for today. _________________ -----
