It doesn't annoy me nearly as much as the more pathetically obvious attempt at hip-ness via use of the term "Right?!?" to mean something like, "I know", or "I can't believe it either!"

Here in NJ, the correct use of that term would be"Yeah, right?"

And there's the conflation of those two into, "I know, right?" You see that an awful lot on Facebook these days. But it gets worse. More often than not, you see it without the comma! ("I know right?")

I'm pretty sure I was well versed in the proper use of the comma by the fifth grade. Nowadays, I see lots of copy, audition or otherwise, in which commas are either omitted altogether or inserted randomly, where they don't belong. When did schools stop teaching kids how to correctly use commas?

To take it a step further, I've even seen "IKR?" That one kind of blew my mind for a minute.

Kevin, looks like a great book! Thanks for the link.

As a former elementary teacher, elementary principal, curriculum staff developer and special education director, I can assure everyone that proper speech and writing mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.) are taught.....and taught.....and taught...and, actually learned. The easy leap is to damn the teachers if kids (and adults) don't demonstrate those skills. It's maddening.

Teachers now also have the added burden of 'unteaching' (to coin a word) habits learned due to abbreviated forms of writing caused by texting. Just what we need. Oy.
