Anybody using SF in this way?

YES!!! Recently. I only just started to do it. And it CAN be done!

I've always had a system with SF for long narrations split up into separate files - like e-learning. It’s a lot like the system Chris uses. Hit R for record and then create separate files by hitting R to stop and R to start again –creating regions which SF will then auto split into separate files. If I have a pickup within each region/file I would drop a marker by hitting M. So I would know I had an edit there but I'd still have separate regions for each file. I'd then name the regions by going down the regions list renaming them and then have the program separate them. Works like a charm. Easy to see. And edit. But if you're NOT editing - as in if you're narrating a book and sending off punch-and-roll audio without editing - I can only think it would take more time that way.

THEN!!!! Thanks to David Stifel, www.BurroughsGuy.com - who created a script which he sent me after I saw a post about it on FB , I can now punch and roll in SF. It’s super easy and works wonderfully. With David’s permission I’m happy to forward the script and instructions it to anyone who needs it. Shoot me an email – you know where to find it.

I'm using AA5.5 which doesn't have a punch and roll option so I've been dropping a marker when I do a do-over. While it can get kinda ugly when you look at all the marker's in the file, it really cuts down on my editing and I stay in the creative flow of the read. I wish I had an iEngineer with the optional floor seeping upgrade.

I looked that up, but the script was only available for version 3. The issue with th e new versions is the preroll option was removed. Why Adobe...why??

Yup, Jason is right. Not there for 5.5 or 6. His awesome tutorial is also only available for Windows as Mac doesn't have the AHK thingy.

I've been refining my technique using Cubase, and I have a workflow that seems to really go well for me. Now, I expect I'll change it up as time goes on and I'm learning about Cubase automation, but here's what I currently do:

When recording, I sit with the keyboard on my lap. I have a nice comfy chair that I can really feel relaxed with and gives me the right posture.

Cubase has a "marker track". I assume other packages do something similar. The key to insert a marker is INS (go figure). So while recording, if I flub it, screw something up, sniffle, whatever- just tap INS, wait a second or so, and carry on. At the end of the chapter I record a good five to ten seconds of room tone.

After I'm done recording the track, I go through the markers. At each one I crop out the mistake or whatever and move on. For Cubase you have to use the "Delete Time" function, not just "Delete", or it doesn't move the markers with the audio. It's very important that all other tracks are locked or they will get the segment deleted too!

This is a very quick part of the process. I usually have between 5 and 15 markers depending on chapter length and if I hit a CST. Wink However, I can get through them in about 2 to 3 minutes because I'm only hitting those bits.

I then mute the track and LOCK IT. This is critical because on the next track, if I delete time, it will delete the same time from any unlocked tracks.

I then create a new track, record the next chapter, and repeat.

When I'm done with all the chapters or get to a good point for it, I'll go back over each chapter and do these steps:

Find a nice quiet bit of room tone at the end of the track. Copy it to the clipboard, and turn on the "lane display" function of Cubase, which allows you to put multiple audio clips in the same track.

I then paste the room tone into the lane, and duplicate it to the length of the chapter.

At this point I have two audio clips in the same track, but only one plays; the one on the bottom. If I delete a piece of the bottom lane, the lane above comes through- so the room tone is there whenever I delete.

Now I just listen to the whole thing and for anything I don't like (excess breaths, mouth noise, etc) I can delete it and the room tone fills it in automatically- no need to paste or adjust. This is where I'd do any punchins if I found mistakes that I missed during recording.

After all that is done, I just bounce the track so it's one signal, export it and move on.

Overall with this process I can do about 2.5 to 3 to 1 in terms of time spent and I get a very good product that's ready for a proof pass.

I have no idea how to make something like this work in SoundForge or ProTools, but I will probably cobble together a YouTube video showing the process for anyone interested.

I dig the ability to just delete and have room tone there. For me, I have a few room tone files prerecorded in AA. When I'm editing in waveform mode, I just highlight the part I want to remove and paste the chunk of room tone over it.

Your Tut is awesome though! If I edited in multitrack mode, I would definitely find a way to make that work.

I used to keep a second of room tone on the clipboard and paste it over the offending bits, then adjust the length as needed. But I like the multi-lane edit with the backing track of room tone because it's faster and more flexible- I can change the length of a gap between phrases without having to fiddle with multiple segments.

I'll have to get a copy of ProTools and SoundForge (do they have a trial?) and see if I can come up with a comparable workflow.

Jason - one of these days when I have some free time I'll download the AA 6.0 demo and play with it - even though they removed the pre-roll function there's got to be a work around with AHK to get the same effect. AA 5.5 and 6.0 should be similar enough to make it work for both.

That still doesn't help the mac folks, though - sorry Frown

I unfortunately (well really fortunately) am Mac folk Smile

I did, however, get ahold of Adobe, and they plan on implementing the preroll option in the next version. I'll probably just stick with Studio One, though. It is free, and the upgrade if AA will probably be at least $75.

To Punch and Roll or Not to Punch and Roll
That is the question.
Whether tis Nobler to click
Or Forever after stop the Flow?

The fault is not in the Adobe Audition
But in the Stars
Or perhaps dear Yorick in the mix

But for my part it was Greek to me.
Thee Twisted Wave and Pro Tools
Out Out Damned inconsistant Wave File

The Course of True Love Never did run Smooth.
But for me and my house...
We will serve the Click.
