Keep an eye on craigslist.org for a used booth. I got a killer deal on mine. 3.5' x 5' Whisper Room was $1,500 and the dude drove it up to me from Atlanta to Kalamazoo, MI for another $400.
The resale thing is a good point to keep in mind. |

I think I heard Bruce paging me.
Don't know if I'd have the same rapport with the creatures around your house as mine ... but as for the landscapers ..... an early lunch - on the talent of course - is always welcome. Or late afternoon. snack. |

Here's a maybe-possibility--If your space is acoustically good already, maybe the biggest issue in noise reduction is the window(s) and door.
A solid door will help a lot. And temporary/moveable windows plugs--there are instructions online and maybe even here If more help is needed , some downward expansion via Symetrix or dbx, combined with the fact that ISDN is "lossy" and you may well be good to go. Save the bucks for the perma-build in the new home. |

This is a good point. Just because you can hear noise in your room doesn't mean the client will be able to. A good starting point to judge what they can hear is to listen to the room and the offending noises with your headphones on to see how much your mic is actually picking up.
My mic is a 416 run thru a dbx286a, and between the tight pickup pattern of the 416 and the slight noise gate I use on the dbx, I'm amazed at the things that don't get picked up when I'm recording, let alone over a phone or ISDN line. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

Ballenberg (does he have a first name?) and Chris make excellent points....
Odds are your external noises are entering through your windows and doors rather than your walls. Even double pane windows let in a lot of offending frequencies. Effective window plugs are cheap and relatively easy to make with Roxul or similar materials. A solid core door can be had on the cheap from your local Habitat Re-Store. Add a sturdy gasket and door sweep, and you've got a much better sonic barrier.
I've been able to turn a spare room into a serviceable recording environment doing just these few things.... Add a little sonic treatment to the walls and ceiling to knock down the reflections (hang 'em with Command Strips for easy removal later) and you should be good to go til you're ready for something more permanent. _________________ Don Brookshire

Just wondering here: Could you make a door plug too, say something that could go inside the jamb on the other side of the doorstop? Would an airspace provided by the stop (say an 1 1/4" space) be helpful? You could put foam gasket on the outside of the frame to 'wedge' it into place against the jamb and floor covering. That might save the difficulty of trying to fit a new door into the existing opening.
If you do replace the door with something solid core, then replace the hinge screws closest to the stop with longer ones (#9- 2 1/2" long, Lowes' sells them for particle board) to help the jamb stay in place. A lot of carpenters (not this one mind you) don't even bother to shim doors that are hollow core since they are so light. _________________ “Real freedom is freedom from the opinions of others. Building a Recording Studio - Jeff Cooper
Tons of info your constructor.

Depending on where you are, perhaps you could make arrangements with an existing studio that has ISDN capabilities on an "as needed" basis? Then you wouldn't have to build anything but could still promote your ISDN service. _________________ Joe Rodriguez, Bilingual Voice Actor | The Voiceover Thespian Blog |
