Got a chuckle this morning when a radio host on a local Toronto station was reading some copy. After he tripped over 'just steps' two or three times, he stopped and said - that's hard, two 'st's together. He pondered briefly and then read 'a few steps...' Then he said - that's how it should have been written!

Maybe someone should be writing an article on how to write copy that is to be read aloud.

Sounds like a great idea. Should we put a sidebar in there about pre-reading copy before doing the live spot too?

Elaine,

I've found that sometimes I can get away with reading it as "juss-steps" so that I'm not trying to squeeze a "t" sound where, at least in the listener's mind, it doesn't necessarily need to be. The context of the copy makes all the difference: conversational? Formal? A character who would say it one way or the other?

If a producer or client insists, I can usually say it correctly. Wink

There was a big gas station in Bangor, ME called "Dick Stacey's Fuel Mart." He sponsored some features on the station I worked at (WABI). I slipped one day and called it "Mule Fart," and could never get it right after that.

I'm sorry to say there's an 8-year-old inside me that lives in my head, too. I think I've already related my story here about playing "Young Turds" by Rod Stewart.

So, I'm guessing the Fuel Mart doesn't exist anymore... Most likely replaced by a Dysarts.
