Has anyone ever asked you for a DAY rate? I understand on-camera spokespersons might have a day rate, but have never heard of a day rate for an off-camera VO.
Anyone? _________________ Mike

$1200 minimum but most jobs when they happen tend to pay "north" of that. |

I believe to calculate a fair rate, one would use this formula
X=TYB PB+BS/250+2SMP+PRS+ICB/W
Or:
Day rate : Total yearly billings of Mssrs. Banks and Souer, divided by 250 average working days, plus lunch must be provided, which shall consist of 2 Scottish Meat Pasties plus one Primanti's sandwich, and an Iron City beer/served warm in British style
So figure roughly $3200 USD for the day, plus a nice lunch as shown |

8 hours away from the studio and therefore a quick response to X number of incoming voice jobs and auditions? Off the top of my head $1,600 would be a bare minimum. I've gone to Seattle for the day for a bit less, but it was a first opportunity to work with a major video game company.
I've done a lot of industrial videos and day player roles for TV over the years and I love doing it, but $500 to $750 for several hours of being away from my audio man cave? Just not that interested these days.

After explaining to the person requesting the day and hourly rates that the rate structures most familiar to me were either:
– a minimum rate for 0 to 5 (or 10) minutes, and upwards incrementally from there,
Or
– a first hour rate, plus a lower rate for subsequent half-hours,
Or
– a per-word rate,
his response was: "Coming up with a per-second rate would fit our pricing model."
Is this guy jerking my chain, or has anyone ever worked on a per-second basis? _________________ Mike

Respond - The per second rate - Should it include pauses? |

Just divide your day rate by 28800. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I vote for chain jerking--hard to believe that's a serious query.
But seriously, the question I'd ask is, day rate for what? Is it for 8 hours of reading copy? Is it to be on call for a flat rate for multiple revisions of a project that's on deadline and changing by the minute? Do they want to buy an all-you can eat package of commercials for a day rate (bad deal, I'd say)
In each case, I'd think a different rate would apply. Day rate as I know it applies to sound men and photographers and such. And even then, they're usually working on one project for the day- |
