Justin,

The "Porta-booth" IS a box.

Oh, if you cannot score Japanese screens, consider either a couple of doors hooked together or some simple, cheap, wood lattice from Home Depot or Lowes. Not only could it look pretty inside the room, but it will be functional and taller.

When finished recording you would then be able to put the mic into the desk/closet/cave area, fold the screen/doors/lattice against the wall and use the rest of the room for other pursuits,

Keeping your 'puter in the closet also allows you to close the closet to keep things quieter while recording. The area would be able to support a desk where you can then edit the audio.

I know that the Porta-Booth is a box. It's just that they tout the thing as an effective tool for on-the-road (and possibly at-home) recording, so it leads one to believe that perhaps they'd done something with the design that would allow it to sound decent.

perhaps ... but i'm thinking not.

i picked up a few cubicle panels that are about 5' tall and macgyver those to beat down the reflections etc. it's working, although not completely, so i'd suggest that you keep trying various materials. i'm not limited to not altering the room as you are, justin, but i do have unique issues that present many problems, so i'm with ya on the macgyver tactics and a lot of crossing the fingers.

here is a link to a pvc pipe vo booth. it's short and kinda weird (the footie, not the booth), but you get one idea of many, many you might consider with simple pvc pipe, pvc cutters (get the good ones, for the pro) and auralex and moving blankets (which he doesn't use but you could!).

How about PVC frame, wrapped in soundblankets, with auralex pinned to it?

Also, I would consider facing out while in the booth, not facing in while you stand...and then put a mess of soundblankets on the wall directly across from the booth.

All: Thanks again for all the awesome input. Since I last posted, the plan has changed a bit. I'm no longer planning to use the closet space. Instead, I'm working on converting a corner of the room into a combination recording/work space, with lots of help from the plentiful moving blankets that my wife acquired. We did about half the work on Thursday, and plan to finish the rest today. I've taken a bunch of pics of the progress, and will post it all once it's finished and tested.
