VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Karl, sorry about the delay in replying about the V88. This is not really a VO mic and is best used for overheads. The MXL V88 can be pressed into service as a studio mic - IF necessary, but is not my first, second, or third choice for VO. An MXL 990 might be a better choice for VO or for a few dollars more the venerable V67G which is based on the famous U87 circuit.

The B1 is a good, not great, Chinese mic, a bit shrill and prone to high end harshness as it has 1 to 2 dB boost around 9k, but is clean. This mic like many others low priced LDC's; is based on the infamous Schoeps circuit which added with the Chinese capsule make it a good choice for modding.

Any as you have noticed there are some fun things you get used to around here like llamas, watercress, and cake. Welcome to the menagerie.

Melissa - I am soo glad to get rid of these llamas. Stinky things.

Grant, you're welcome to the llamas, just don't rub watercress all over them - that would be bad. Oh, and make sure you keep the vets supplied with chocolate, they like that.

As a musician, I know from researching guitars and amps that you can take one product, and find all sorts of reviews (often conflicting) under the sun about it. I think the same is true of mics to a large extent. I've done some research, and landed on a mic that seems to be serving a considerable number of VO professionals pretty well, so I shall mic it work for me until it's time to upgrade and/or diversify. Having said that, your feedback is duly noted and appreciated. I am but a humble apprentice in these parts.

Karl - As for the llamas, I saw no such clause in my sign-up process, and I therefore categorically reject that responsibility! Smile

Yes, Grant, my opinion is just that. Choose which microphone works for you, not me or anyone else.

I use the V88 for overheads in the studio I have not found a good reason to use it as a VO mic. The B1 is good, microphone, to make it a better mic requires some minor changes with the circuit. Your needs from a microphone depends upon your experience and requirements of a microphone, not mine.

I require a mic which is clean, uncolored, full body, smooth through the frequency spectrum, phat yet warm and inviting with no shrill highs or muddy lows. and if possible a small boost in the 4 to 6k frequency range..

Oh, I thought there was a clause about cleaning up after, not cooking, the llamas?

Frank...all good sir. I'll get all the value out of the V88 that I can. Thankfully there are a number of options in this price range, or close to it, so if I need to diversify, I will. I won't know till it arrives and gets used. I'm looking forward to getting my demo recorded.
