Well this is ironic. I got home with the M-Audio BX5 set yesterday. Am liking the sound from them. Perfect for what I need at the moment.

Have had mine for about 2 weeks and love them now, but it took some getting used to. For years I've used a nicer high-end set of Logitechs that are really designed for music and had awesome low-end. The BX5s don't have that and I had to realize that, okay, these are MONITOR speakers, not dance or music speakers. Now I'm lovin' 'em.

They are amazing just for voice. I'm on Youtube and an ad comes on; it's the first time that I've let it roll. The VO just sounded so crisp (not the performance, mind you, just the quality).

I have Wharfdale Diamond Pro Active 8.2 studio monitors.

Use the bass cut filter on them to keep it from being too boomy.
No idea whether they are good for what we do, but so far they seem to be working pretty well.

Thanks Yonie. I'm using a MinPort Pro, no mixer or any outboard gear, so the audio just comes from the computer tower. 1/8" stereo outlet.

Seems as if Bish shoulda' bought some stock in Avid products...
Look at the start of this post. Peter rec'd the BX's to me, then we all jumped on board! In my work so far, I've found them to be wonderfully accurate for my home studio. Make sure you've got good speaker cable. I've got mine coming out of my Mackie Blackjack Onyx's TRS outs going with XLR into the speakers. I set their independent volumes to a little over halfway, and use the Mackie for my volume control.

I've got a guy that makes custom cables, and I'm now using Mogami on everything. Even for speakers. HUGE difference!

Then you'll need something that also combines the two monitors, as they are both connected separately via either XLR or TRS.

Sorry to bring this up after things had died down, but just thought you should know that the M-Audio BX5a model has been upgraded to a newer model. I went into the local Guitar Center today and the clerk told me that the BX5a model could be had now for around $170 for the pair. That's quite a deal. While they didn't have any in stock, they may still be available through their website. He didn't think that the new version (can't remember right now what it is called) really was improved all that much.

Hey Scott - I've had my M-Audio BX5 D2s for a few days now and I'm lovin' them.
Now...this is my first set of reference monitors, so practically anything would have been a step up from my old Harman/Kardon computer speakers. Wink

I've got to ask this question.

If you're monitoring your own voice, and you're recording using a single mic, do you need two monitor speakers for stereo, or would one do?

I've got a good set of speakers for listening to music, and I'm thinking that I'd rather buy one better monitor than a pair of lesser quality ones just for recording. Am I crazy?

I don't think so. Mainly need stereo monitors when mixing with (stereo) music,
