I love hearing a transplant try to pronounce some of the english town names in Massachusetts. Worcester (wuh-stir) Leominster (lemon-stir) Leicester (lester) Peabody (Pee-biddy) _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

i knew a guy in high school whose name was spelled "Timonthy" but insisted on it being pronounced "Timothy" saying "it's a silent n" ... ok. i never asked him, but always assumed his parents just couldn't spell. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Writer, Ronald Dahl's parents had the same problem and don't get me started on George Lucas and SIXTH. |

My young mind just couldn't process Sith. I wondered for the longest time just what sixth thing he was lord of, and who the other 5 lords were.
Keeping with he spirit of this thread, I love scotch whisky & enjoy the challenge of learning how to pronounce distillery names like Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila. |

Bruichladdich is very nice. Deirdre is able to drink $100 worth (third of a bottle) in a few hours with no real ill-effects. |

Ah yes, 'Laddie is very nice indeed, and I love Jim McEwan's philosophy towards the making of 'uisge beatha':
"Romantics, restless spirits, curious minds, seekers of truth, renegades, mavericks, trouble-makers. We acknowledge all of these epithets and refuse to distinguish between them." |

I do not have a discerning palate when it comes to whisky... while I can appreciate that some would find immense pleasure in a $300 bottle of the good stuff, whenever I'm offered something like that I usually refuse and ask for one that's a little less refined... I know my limitations
Boring story... whilst at grammar school (450 boys in neat uniforms and masters/prefects wearing gowns) we had a fair selection of names with imaginative spellings, spurious redundant (or omitted) letters and non-intuitive pronunciations. The sort of place where if you didn't get to Oxford or Cambridge you were considered an abject failure (I failed). At one point we had a rabid socialist English teacher who went to great pains to point out these "affectations" at every opportunity. He didn't last long
Cheers

And don't forget Woburn (WOO-burm), Billerica (bill-RIK-uh), and Haverhill (HAVE-rul). _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I was a huge fan of Laphroaig for years before I knew how to pronounce it properly. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

i'm partial to the double cask balvenie, and not a big fan of what i deem way-peety laphroig. but hey, it's all good. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Mine is Batch #14...still can't bring myself to open it.
Won't open this except for a very special occasion. (From what I understand, the "map" bottles are rare now & considered collectible.)
I also have a newer Talisker 18 that has yet to be opened.
My favorite. Glendronach reopened in 2003 & they've re-released the 15yo line, for about twice what I paid for my pre-1996-distillery-closing bottles (sadly, only 1 is left.)
And then there are the bourbons... |
