"We're currently running around with our hair on fire and will get to you as soon as we can."

(saw something like this at imgur.com this morning.)

I think Mary is definitely on to something. How about: "All our associates are currently holding an arm wrestling contest to determine who gets to serve you. The winner will be with you in just a moment."

How about:

"Look, we'll try to get with you as soon as possible but, in the meantime, we'll make it seem as though we're doing something pleasant for you by playing some cheesy music. Fear not, however, for we'll interrupt said cheesy music every 30 seconds or so in an attempt to convince you that your call is very important to us, to again lead you on by suggesting your needs will be addressed very soon, and by offering the ridiculous statement that you might find the answer to your question in a more timely fashion by visiting our lame website, which features little useable information, broken links, links that take you in circles, and no means whatsoever to reach us. Your satisfaction will come only when you decide you don't have the time to deal with us and our ass-backward approach to customer service.

Thank you for choosing {Verizon, Comcast, Cablevision or other phone, cable, or other utility company) ."

Like we have a F#@$%^ing choice.

I can't wait to fill out their survey.

I ordered some stuff from Marlin P. Jones recently and was floored when they answered the phone with "Marlin P. Jones and Associates". Same experience at DigiKey (except they didn't say they were MPJ). Awesome.

I totally agree with you , Liz.... I got that message from AOL the other day in a phone message: "at your earliest possible convenience"...then they proceeded to tell me what hours they were available! Hours that were not at all convenient for me!

I love that message about "...we're experiencing an unusually high volume of calls..." In fact, it should say, "we were incredibly shortsighted and cheap in ensuring we have enough operators for high-volume call times..."
