I've talked to a half dozen insulation purveyors west of the Mississippi and none of them want to sell me a modest quantity of Johns Manville Insul-Shield, 2" thick unfaced boards, 2' x 4'. I'm looking for 160 to 200 sqft, or 20 to 25 boards. Anyone bought some recently from someone that you can recommend?

There's an outfit here in Portland, Oregon that sells Owens Corning 703, but the dang stuff smells like a dead fish (formaldehyde) and their mineral wool smells about two thirds as bad.

Many thanks,

B

I guess you tried these 2 distributors? http://www.specjm.com/locator/googleresults.asp

Lowe's carries JM residential products. You might try to convince them to special order you some.

Yeah, try Lowe's, should be able to get it for you. You'll need 3 bails.

Call Johns Manville and find who their distributors are there.

The Insul-shield is odorless.

Sometimes it can have an odor. Usually setting it out in the sun for a day or two will take care of it.

Well begosh and begorrah, there's a lumber yard/building supply company here in town that can order it at just over $1 a sqft for the 2" thick boards. Holy cow, that's about half of what I've seen in the past. It'll take 2 to 3 weeks for them to find room on a truck heading this way from the factory, but I guess I can hide under my quilt for a little while longer.

Bruce, one thing to make sure of is that the type they are quoting is exactly the spec that you want. It comes in a variety of densities and thicknesses, and I too was quoted a really low number at first but it turned out not to be the thickness I needed, which was more expensive. Congrats on finding some!
