Bettie--

I use an RE20 every blessed day of the week.

I love that mic.
It's got a bit more bottom than some of my producers want to hear but for radio imaging and some of my other bread-and-butter stuff it's an ace in the hole.

I switched the rolloff (what does that mean, anyway?) on the Senny 421 from S to M and nada, zilch, nuttin'. Of course, I sound super dupes at the audio store...

Bettie,

Rolloff has to do with whether some of the (usually) lowest bass tones are diminished or not. On many mikes the rolloff reduces (rolls off) everything below 20Hz. It's called rolloff because the drop takes the shape of a slope, not a sharp drop, when you look at a frequency plot.

Based on what you mention above, we can eliminate the idea that the microphone itself isn't working.

So, here are a couple of other things to try in your attempts to track down this mystery:

1. Change the mike cable you're using for one that's known to be good.
2. Make sure the mike cable is plugged all the way in to both the connector on the microphone and at the other end on to the mixer.
3. Pull the main fader for the channel to which the mike is connected all the way down. Then, turn the trim pot all the way clockwise (wide open) and then slowly raise the main fader while talking into the mike. Once you have the main fader to the Unity position on the mixer (that spot that's marked with a U), if the mike is now too loud, turn the trim pot back counter-clockwise until the sound is a more normal volume.

Please let us know how it goes. (edited to correct typo)
