The audibook project I'm working on (with another voice talent) has an open-ended deadline, and it's been left to my sole discretion on the production end of things. Problem is, I'm unclear on how to address the issue of tables (or data sets with columns), particularly when the author writes beforehand "I’ve summarized these percentages in Table 13.1 below."
I've been given leeway to abridge the book as needed, so I'm thinking of dropping the tables and the references to them. It is, after all, an audiobook and not a text medium...

As the Producer side of me gets me into trouble with things like this... I am going to suggest you consider several things... since you are doing an "abridged book" (per your admission), ask yourself how much the content would suffer if you lose that 'table'?
Revise or reword the 'jist' of the table if necessary, but do your darndest to keep some of the content if the reference is needed.
Also, when the final audiobook is complete will they have the desire or NEED for the graphic? If so, make sure you have re-printed the table into a booklet which can be referenced to the audio.
toodles,

When I read nonfiction audiobooks for the blind, I often encountered graphics or tables. I took each on a case by case basis; deciding whether to drop the reference, or add a sentence describing what I saw in the graphic. Just my two cents for volunteer work. Perhaps someone else will share protocol for paid audiobooks. _________________ Mary |
