Homophones are OK but I'd rather have a pair of Sennheiser HD-25s.

Just like "flammable" means something that could catch fire, and "INFLAMMABLE!!" means something is flammable and holy crap you just set it on fire.

Heh. Actually, for most of its existence in the English language, "inflammable" was a common word meaning "combustible", based off the root word "inflame". By the early-to-mid 20th century, however, many people mistakenly viewed the "in" as a negative modifier, and came to use the word to mean "not combustible". Hence, increasingly common usage turned what was once a non-word ("flammable") into a legitimate and important enough label to appear in big letters on the side of big fuel tankers.

You and I may even live long enough to see today's younger generations turn "conversate" into an actual word. With any luck, though, I'll be deaf and beset with cataracts by then.

The word that I noticed creeping in & that bugged me at first but that I've now gotten pretty used to is "invite" used as a noun instead of "invitation"
As in "Thanks for the invite!" when connecting with someone on the social networks.

I doubt it since today's youth don't have a clue how to 'conversate'.
However, we will most assuredly see bastardizations of the word 'text', such as "textulize", "textivate", "textosterone" and who knows what else??

To some degree, we have the advertising world to thank for word bastardization. And, the more that people sit in front of the TV or other visual medium - especially the 'impressionable' (or those who don't do much thinking for themselves), the more the bastardized spellings are believed to be correct.

But we can't blame the ad world for this. It's creative license. Just as we can't blame fast food restaurants for causing obesity. It's the decisions people make for themselves. They can choose to have a salad instead of a double cheeseburger, and they can open a dictionary or do some crossword puzzles instead of believing everything they read.

Before I forget (and not related to advertising creative license) one misspelling that I began seeing a number of years ago already was 'prolly.' While this might today be an abbreviation used in texting, I think the word in this form was/is used by those who spell based on how they and others mispronounce 'probably.'

Another icky mispronunciation I hear more and more is 'firmiliar.' Quite often we can get a clue to pronunciation by knowing the origin of a word. In this case, 'familiar' originally meant (in the 14th century) 'of the family.'

No lie: I've heard these more than several times on TV and while out in public:

“I sleep in the fecal position.”

“I had boughten it.”

“I borrowed him the money.”

“A bunch of profound words I can’t say on television.”

“It was forgotabouten.”

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
