Oh.

My.

God.

My Zephyr is suddenly not transmitting.

My husband mucked around in my studio today, trying to listen to something online-- my 16-year-old son tried to help.

I get home from Boston this afternoon with 10 minutes to spare before airtime and my GODDAM ISDN CODEC WILL NOT TRANSMIT.

I can't tell if the problem is in my Mackie-- or the ISDN unit or what.

All I know is it worked fine on Friday and today I was totally boned.

The Mackie gets sound ok out to the amp that runs my speakers, but the Zephyr sees no signal on the transmit side AT ALL.

Hellfire and damnation.

Pooooor Deeb! Your life must've flashed before your eyes. I'm guessing that you checked the connections? Powered it down and then back up?

Yikes! Did you ever get it to work?

I know this probably is not related but did you see where NOAA announced a G5 Geomagnetic Storm on their web site?

Sorry you had trouble. Maybe get a lock for the studio door? Smile

I musta re-booted that puppy twenty times. I changed the send config. Shut down, rebooted, changed back to the broadcast send. Shut down. Waited 5 minutes. Rebooted. Unpluged everything from the wall, waited, pluged back in rebooted, checked connections, unplugged XLR cables, swapped outputs, etc, etc, etc.

Blah blah bleah.

The plan this morning is to dismantle everything and run cable to the Zephyr from a different bus on the Mackie.

Like I feel like doing this.

I can't see anything wrong with the Mackie config, but I don't have any idea what my husband did, what buttons he pushed, whatever. I have everything back to the way I normally do but the CODEC is still not getting a send.

If I ascertain that hammy-handedness is the culprit, I'm buying an iMac for the house TODAY and setting it up in a central place. Keep my studio a bit more sacrosanct.

When does hubby get to come home?

Sounds like an absolute nightmare. Best of luck with it.

Your situation is my worst nightmare. I test my ISDN gear out weekly, whether it's used or not.

Do you run your session through Pro Tools? I recall you said you use a Mac laptop and PT.

I do my recordings through my Mac PowerBook and Pro Tools, but I am on the air every afternoon with Boston Metro Traffic.

It's a Mic >Symetrix > Mackie > Zephyr chain.

When the Zephyr is on, I can see my line level even if I'm not linked up with someone.

I got nuthin.

I've got my stuff kind of "installed" at my desk. It's not is a rack that I can get behind, so getting to the back of the amp, the Symtrix or the Zephyr is a pain.

I may just change that setup to-day, even though it means buying more "furniture" to rack this stuff on. I simply CANNOT have another day like I did yesterday.

WTF!!!

Good luck with that, Deidre. Nuthin sucks more than a malfunction ya can't track down. An engineer I once worked with always took a Zen approach. His theory was that thing's screw up where they should, but fail to connect.

Deirdre:

It seems to me that you could remove the Mackie from the chain and not suffer at all. As a matter of fact, it might sound better. You can control your gain with either the Symetrix or the input to your Zephyr.

I've used this chain since around 1995 and never had a problem.

I hear ya on that-- I just have number of applications I use my studio for, video, non-vo audio blah blah blah.

I guess I'm a sissy and like to keep my headphones plugged in to one place.

I have come to think it's a TelCo problem. I've got "Inact" on the Zephyr screen and a blinking sync light.

If you call my ISDN numbers, you get a fast busy.

Sounds like Central Office issues to me.

OK.

Here's the final diagnosis.

There is a very small swich right next to the main XLR outs on the backside of my Mackie. It's a 30 dB pad.

I never EVER use it. It's even hard to see. It didn't occur to me that it could have been engaged because I barely remembered that is was there.

Mister Cooper musta mashed it when he was trying to get sound.

I'm shopping for an iMac or eMac tomorrow.

I'm not having other people in my studio any more-- seriously.

I can't risk another mistake like that.

That's one of the things I was worrying about too DB-- seem to recall something about "old radio folks" and multiple marriages....

So glad it's solved.
