How long do you all keep the dry recordings you do for clients? Do you discard them after you receive a copy of the finished product?

For storage of those not-yet discarded files, and of the finished products, do you have a separate hard drive?

A description of a system with >1 hard drive would be helpful. Probably many/most of you have a dedicated hd just for audio activities?

Rejoicing in advance for yr help...

I have become obsessive in my archiving, but I can find things now that used to get lost.

I keep my sessions in folders named for the month.

Once that month is 2 months gone, I burn the entire folder to a data DVD.

I have tracking software that lets me seach the archives--it keeps a list of every filename.

Do I need all of this? Nah. But every once in a while, I'll want to listen to or use a dry track for a spot or an audition I did and now I know I can get my hands on it.

I do close to the same thing...

...but I archive to a regular CD-R once a month

-one for v/o only sessions

-one (sometimes two) for full-prod projects

-and one for auditions

(however, depending on the work load...sometimes it all fits on one disc  )

I also burn a detailed spreadsheet onto each disc with it's contents...and then I keep a less detailed spreadsheet on my hard drive that catalogues all of the discs.

It sounds like a lot...but it only takes me about one hour a month. And with the price of CD-Rs...it's quite inexpensive too. It's really nice to have all of that crap, especially the dry audition takes, when it comes time to put together a new demo (which I could probably stand to do).

I archive to CD every month. Everything. Finished product and parts (if any).
