Hi all,

I need some help converting to the format above for a phone client. I have captured at 16 bits, 44.1 and I have adobe audition and protools available.

Pro tools doesn't seem to have anything about this type of format.

In audition there are several pcm format choices. One is windows Pcm (wav, bwf) and the other is PCM RawData (pcm raw). The latter has options that include 16-bit intell pcm (msb) or 16-bit motorola pcm (msb, csb).

What the heck am I talking about?

Kathy

I would venture a guess that if you have no option of this type simply save it as a .wav file and it should be correct.

kathy, you want windows pcm .wav option as your saved file.

open your file and, from the edit drop down menu, convert sample type, choose your sample rate, select mono or stereo, choose resolution (16 bit), then save as windows pcm (not pcm raw data)

Thanks for all your responses. Diane, that's working for me.

Just for future reference, and for general info, does anyone know which audio format actually works best of these two for a phone system

CCITT u-law (G711a) 8kHz, 8 bit, mono (which is actually the recommended one)

or

PCM, 8kHz, 16 bit, mono

I'm wondering if the PCM would sound better because it's 16 bit, even though the CCITT is supposedly recommended.

Thanks once again for all responses!

Try both and use your ears? Esses are always a problem on these low res files.

Oh, those esses! No matter how crisply they come out of my mouth and sound in the "normal wav" file, they get s-s-smushed and s-s-smattered when I convert to a phone-type file. However, everyone seems to be used to hearing it in a phone line, and I haven't gotten any complaints. So, I've decided to just let it go and not worry about it.

Once again, thanks for all your posts.

Kathy,

My settings for most of my OHMs are 16KHz, 16-bit, mono. I save the files as A/mu-Law WAV files. Audition 1.5 gives me the option of saving them as that format (in the 'Save As Type' field),

For some of the OHM systems I have connected with, a regular Windows WAV file doesn't work.
