My day job is also my one major hurdle. I can't do much in market work.
That pesky conflict of interest clause in my contract. Pfffft! |
There are around 6 billion people on the planet, 250 million Americans. Because of your contract the local market excludes how many? Try talking to the remainder.
Major hurdle? About as major as living in Port Gordon |

My ultimate VO Goal is to eventually have the option of doing it full time if I choose. Right now the radio gig pays the bills and it would be hard to break away from that safety net. My short-term goal is to build a home studio. I mostly do radio and tv commercials and industrial narrations now. Would like to be an image voice for radio and tv someday as well as try my hand at voicing characters for video games.

Sounds excellent Banksey. Post us a picture of you in your "trailer guy" uniform and hat.....I can hear it now...."would you like a local tag with that order of killer trailer pipes?"
Free lunch vouchers???? I was not told about that......that really sweetens the deal now.
Tom....sorry for hi-jacking your thread. _________________ Ben

Uniform on and ready to Voice that trailer. Some reads are both bright and dangerous, hence the head gear and protective eye wear.

Oh yes, that's the final goal. I miss my sailboat like you wouldn't believe. Hence the reason I've "hidden" a picture of a boat on my website:

Hey Tom -- infomercials????
I did a half-hour one on-camera a few years ago for a large drugstore chain's Christmas campaign -- and as we walked out of the shoot my absolutely gorgeous (think Keith Urban cross-bred with Tom Selleck) and talented co-host and I looked at each other in bewilderment -- and then he broke the silence with, "I suppose this means its time we should just retire from this biz".
It was a fun, fun, fun shoot, but no infomercial host gets much respect in this neck of the woods. Hope things are different where you are. _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee

my VO dream is to land a gig! I mean yeah it's great having your 83 year old mom hear your demo and say "you've got the best voice I've ever heard sweetie". Taking into consideration she's deaf. hahahahahaha...kidding.
My dream is to just be in this biz and to be able to make my living off of it.
I love this stuff and I really have no preference as to what type of VO I do.
I don't have the looks for on-camera work, and really have no desire for on-camera work, but I just love everything about VO. _________________ TG2

My dream is to land a handful of choice TV and radio campaigns, maybe a role in something animated, and earn a seven-figure salary for a while. Just for a few years. I wouldn't be overly greedy about it.
My goal is to make a reasonably comfortable living doing only voiceover work.
My wish is to land my first job.
I love doing just about anything VO-related -- even dry corporate narration stuff. I really enjoy acting and all of its challenges, but I treasure my anonymity. I was born to do voiceover. (And I have the face for it.)

Tom,
I've got the same contractual limitations you do.... Banksey may not realize that some of those contracts limit broadcast exposure nationwide(mine), not just locally. Talk to Drew. As an ND, he'll tell you there's a reason for all that.
Not to worry, though, most of the sages in the VO world tell me about 90% of voice-over & narration work these days does not conflict with those limits.
Go for it!
Personally, I won't feel I've made it until after I've narrated my first novel for a major AudioBooks Publisher. Talk about a tough clique to crack!
Nice talkin' to you the other day!
