My day Wednesday started with a terse reprimand from Mike Gomez at Voice123.
In fact, the subject of the e-mail was "PLAGIARISM CASE".
Yeah.
As a journalist, I gotta admit, that caught my eye.
Read the rest of this rant HERE.
This is not a cheap attempt to drive traffic to my blog. It's just that it's 2:45am PST, and I don't feel like typing it all over again.
Good morning!

I suppose you could take it down and then put in its place a note saying that V123 asked you to take down your post complimenting them on their policy of yadda yadda...
It does seem rather shortsighted of them to do that. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Dear Mr Lowell or may I call you Steve?
Named after the trailblazing astronomer Edwin P. Hubble (1889-1953), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a large, space-based observatory which has revolutionized astronomy by providing unprecedented deep and clear views of the Universe, ranging from our own solar system to extremely remote fledgling galaxies forming not long after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. Within operational limits there is little it can not find. Were I equipped with this technology I would still be unable to find my interest in your problem. |

Wait a minute...isn't one of the purposes of a blog to spread "link-love?"...I mean...V123's SEO would have been helped by you, non?
meh....silly.

in one of my cold calls yesterday, I was talking to a producer who used to get his talent through V123. I asked how he liked the service and if he was getting the voices he needs. He said it was OK, but he had heard they treat their talent poorly. I kid you not, that's exactly what he said. _________________ Jeff

Dave... words escape me, for now. It appears that you handled the situation very diplomatically. And it also seems that every cloud does have a silver lining... the PBS gig. Someone is looking out for you.

I'm not defending V123's response to you on this at all. I have my own points of contention with them which I've been vocal about elsewhere.
But I have to offer another perspective here (devil's advocate, if you will).
Regardless of the fact that you were originally making a positive comment about V123's policy, you did quote that entire email verbatim.
I don't know the exact specifics on the law, but I believe in the context of a review or editorial (which your blog would qualify as in this case) you're allowed to quote up to 2-3 paragraphs. But you copy/pasted the entire email which incidentally has V123's copyright info at the bottom of every email they send out.
Yeah, their attitude and approach were unnecessary, but they are within their rights to make such a request. |

To some extent they may be within in their right. However, it isn't right, good business, and not good customer service. I know some here disagree, but we VO folks are the paying customers to the P2P sites. They either fail to realize that fact or doomed to fail. _________________ Gregory Best

Think Facebook! Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
With the current proliferation of public networking sites stating they OWN your content in perpetuity, and the concept of copyright on the internet being a large gray area; the question of "who owns what" is valid.
Would the claim of V123 hold up in court? Maybe, maybe not. Does anyone here want to challenge the idea in a court of law?
Well?
I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is content created by the website owners specifically designed for the use of or by the owner and their visitors is "private" information and therefore may be copyrighted. The process of filing a copyright for content contributed by visitors to a website would be expensive and daunting.
Additionally content contributed by visitors to a website is public information, according to my understanding. This WILL go to a court of law to be decided. Not specifically on Courvo's behalf, mind you. The question of who owns visitor contributed content has not been decided.
Do you own your thoughts or does the owner of this website - yes, our beloved DB? Sorry D.B., I do not meant to bring this to you specifically - but it fits.
Toodles
