Amen.

I still use tables for layout in everything, and CSS for "effects", specialized positioning (like requiring z-order) and styling only.

I posted this link in another forum — A MUSICIAN'S forum! It's not like there's another VO forum—and one of my übergeek pals said "Good thing you weren't in my class... you just flunked. "

This is apparently about as contentious a subject as gun control.

There IS no contest as far as I'm concerned. Tables pretty much work, period. And the tools to create complex layouts based on tables are much more mature than those for creating layout with CSS (which typically do NOT produce bulletproof cross-browser code well anyway).

I would love to use CSS for layout, because changing a layout via CSS if you need to should theoretically be much quicker / easier than with tables. But the CSS spec doesn't allow for enough flexibility and options when it comes to complex layouts.

And most of the design-time tools for CSS layout suck.

So I'll gladly sit in the dunce corner with you, DB!

Yeah— I described it as having to learn Sanskrit in order to translate it into Chinese.

meh!

I felt that way, not too long ago. But the more I work with CSS, I've come to appreciate the flexibility. For some examples of what can be done by changing a style sheet, here's a site for you:

DB is right, CSS versus Tables can stir up passions like Mac vs PC.

But.... don't you need to use CSS if you want to be seen by mobile devices.

(And I like devices! Sarcastic )

So ... I bought one of those ready-made templates to bring my site up to snuff. Thought it would be easier and look more professional than anything I could devise with my lack of knowledge and lack of patience.

Not so, Batman!

Oh, it'll look more businesslike. And CSS is the wave of the present, and I need to learn the stuff. Maybe a class is in order.

Bought the Castro CSS book. I understood the table of contents -- sort of. Travis is now reading the book, so he can translate it to right brain speak for me. I keep picking it up and trying to focus.

Between that and trying to figure out why my midi keyboard entry doesn't work for me on Finale, I feel like such a dunce!

You people are brilliant.

I actually like CSS and think it's wonderful when used properly. It makes it very easy to update content without updating everything, and keeps design and content separated. And it makes it much easier to publish simultaneously on multiple platforms — say, for PC, Windows Mobile, and iPhone.

Having said that, I'm in the middle of an ongoing project creating an internal web site for ... um, a large Japanese automaker. This is one of those "tool" websites that does a lot, gives the users access to lots of data, etc., so it's fairly complicated. But the CSS ... <cough> The main style sheet now contains over 1800 lines of code.

Just shoot me now.
