wow, kara
if they can get YOU mad.....yeesh.
don't they realize you can let loose some dragonball fire on their bee-hinds?
seriously, the combination of ignorance, arrogance, and alchemy that goes into the ISDN chain scares me. i've left my long distance service on my own ISDN with sprint after switching some years ago, simply because it seems to work, and i'm afraid of messing with something while it works. i only went to sprint because my main ISDN client (procomm) recommended it. can't remember now who i switched from after months of trouble.
not that i'm glitch-free, but it seems to have been what i needed...once they traced a problem a couple of years ago to some switching station out in the middle of kentucky somewhere!!!!!!
i hope your tirade about withholding the phone lady's paycheck finally "pays off". _________________ rowell gormon

If your American telephone junction boxes are as flaky as some of our British ones, then this is possible!
The symptoms you describe sound like Bit Errors on the circuit causing a clocking error, leading to the two perfectly synched ISDN Bearer channels not being quite so perfectly synched (sunk?) just for a moment. That's enough to cause the muting and the squawking sound you describe. In my experience, if the squawking is happening, usually only one end of the connection will hear it - it'll either blast your ears, or the ears of the studio guys at the other end.
Causes of this that I've encountered, over 15 or so years of ISDN life:
1) The ISDN card at the phone exchange needs resetting or replacing.
2) Your codec needs a reboot.
3) It's been raining somewhere between here and there and there's a bad junction box letting water in, causing contact resistance to rise in the joints.
4) The phone company routing didn't work out right for you this time but it probably will if you drop off and redial.
5) Phillip Banks' dog is tugging on the cable at the Portgordon end.
Your systems differ from ours in a number of key ways but, on this side of the Atlantic, causes 1 and 3 are notoriously difficult to diagnose, as the phone co's remote testing will generally indicate that everything is ok. But all it does is check the line is up and that there is suitable Terminal Adapter equipment connected at your end. All becomes clear when you persuade an engineer to come out with a plug-in tester for the Bit Error Rate. He plugs it in, it sends lumps of data out and sees what comes back. When the error rate is high, the engineer sucks his teeth, and generally says "Hmm. Oooh. Err." What happens next is in the lap of the gods, but getting them to remake any outside junction boxes can be a good start. Note that in bad weather this may require bribery.
Note also that if the problem is due Cause 5, there is no known cure, but plugging in the tester will make his eyes light up and his tail wag. Phillip's, obviously! _________________ Charles Nove

Charles- good information- thank you!!
After several more calls, they finally sent someone out. I jumped up and down as I answered the door and exclaimed, "Please tell me you are going to fix my ISDN!!"
He replied, "I don't know anything about ISDN but your phone line is working fine."
at. wits. end.
He's now on the phone with someone that knows ISDN BRI and is being talked through some tests. I think I'll print this thread in case anything might help them. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I'm sorry that your problems continue Kara, but I so laughed at the last post. Maybe one day you can pull the thread back up and read it.... it's hilarious.
I hope everything gets fixed for you!!!! Once you have ISDN, you'll LOVE it. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Is anyone available to do an ISDN test real quick? The tech is here and we're trying to get the line to do what it did earlier. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Thanks guys! I tested with Bob and Caryn, and am more confused than ever! The guy is still here- so I may be calling one of you guys! Right now we are trying to reach the LD company or Telos tech support. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

OK- just wanted to say thank you again to everyone for being so fantastic! The tech just left. There's good news and bad news. The good news is it's not the ISDN line itself. The bad news is that it's not the ISDN line.
My new best friend, Edward (the ISDN tech) is coming back Monday morning bright and early to call the LD carrier with me. Ironically- it's the same company (Verizon owns MCI).
We are 90% sure it's the LD that is the issue. The Telos seems to be working, I just can't frame properly all of the time, only some of the time. I also have a call into Telos just in case.
Sheesh- this ISDN stuff is incredible!! However, the tech actually came out here at 8:30pm, after already working a full day and stayed for 2 1/2 hours. That certainly helps ease my frustration over the many lost tickets over the last 4 days. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

.gif" alt="W00T" border="0" /> for the tech guy. Now that you have that issue narrowed down... well let's say you are on the right track.
Hoping things work out for you, quickly.
