It certainly has been a trek doing this project - The guy who sells the booth design sez it can be built in a weekend - a "lost weekend" perhaps!!!! My dad is a master carpenter with like 50 years experience, and he couldn't make heads or tails of the plans...not to mention that, f'rinstance, the guy bases his measurements on 1.5" lumber (2x2's) but not all 2x2's are 1.5"....so we get our lumber and map it out and we're off - why? Because his measurements in the plans are wrong. It was a lot of bobbing and weaving to try n get around the vagaries of his plans, but somehow I think we prevailed. Still need to tighten up a few airy spots but I think it'll be OK.

And the clutter shall begin again...Still need to figure a few things out.

I'll say one thing though - Never again!!!!!

Chris,

It looks like it's coming together wonderfully. Thank you for sharing the photos.

Nicely built! Those are a lot of work and require a good deal of improvising.
Looks like "DAW box" plan, am I right? How thick is that Masonite material?

Er, um, yes it is a boxy sort of daw plan.....I'm not too hot on the execution and flow and lack of detail of the plans (lots of mistakes and assumptions made that really boggled us) so I really can't recommend it - but with my dad's experience we were able to modify as we went and make it work.

The masonite was 1/4" thick IIRC, or whatever a standard for that would be (again, my dad is the one who knows this stuff, if not for him I'd be dropping the $$$$ on a Whisperroom or something), this was screwed to the inner 2x2s over the pink board (not 703 in this case) which was inside the siliconed-in 2x4 framed walls (which were covered in Sheetblok).

Is it totally correct? Most likely not, tho we tried to do everything that was said as far as max-ing the dB absorption and ambience reduction. I am going around with an ear to the walls and door to see where I can further squirt silicone if need be, but it's pretty good - next step is to get my PC set up on the new workstation and a mic in the booth and see what the noise floor is. Gotta be better than it has been with just an sE Reflexion Filter on the stand, Yet to be done is the cosmetic stuff, in this case 3/4x3/4 corner moulding painted grey and mitered (he's great at that stuff), not to mention trying to hide the power cords for the 2 fans!!

And BTW, thanks for the pointer to Dave Immer of Digifon, it was a totally smooth ride and he was on it with me every step of the way. AT&T actually came out 3 days early for my install!! I have since done 2 sessions with the box, even before the booth was done!!

Now let's hope my "booth of dreams" will help me attract some work! If I build it, they will come,,,,, Smile

Looks great, Chris! Thank your lucky stars you live in Hampstead, NC, not Hampstead, London, or you'd never have the room (unless you were fabulously rich, of course…)

I'll just shuffle off to my half a wardrobe and start work, then… sob. sniff…

Nice! I built one a couple months back, like you I had to make some mods, and caught a few mistakes in the plans, but on the whole, still pretty cool. I've got booth envy, my is not as quite as I expected, I think I'm gonna have to make some more adjustments to quite it down.

Standard thickness for masonite is 1/8".

If all you need to reduce is the fan noise from your computer, that will be adequate. For sake of comparison, the Whisper Room is made of 3/4" MDF, which is far more effective than 1/8" or 1/4" masonite. That seems to me the weakest link in these plans. Add an interior layer of MDF, seal it with silicone, and now you are talking noise reduction that will be far more effective in the lower frequency bands.

The masonite is on the inside of the walls, behind 1.5" of pinkboard, and the Auralex is affixed to the masonite. The PC is outside the booth on a multi-shelf unit. I wanted to use MDF instead of OSB, but was very concerned about the weight since I'm in a "FROG" room over my garage, and the last thing I need is to collapse my floor and end up crushing my wife's car. Gasp Whether this really would have happened if I used MDF I don't know, but I didn't want to take the chance.

I still need to tighten up a few places but generally it is doing what I hoped it would.
